Acceptable Use Policy

Zaytoun Network exists to be a home for people Big Tech will not keep — for people whose searches, writing, and professional records deserve the same protection as anyone else's. This policy explains what content we will and will not allow, and what happens when something needs to be reviewed. It is incorporated into our Terms of Service.

Where we start

We believe that controversial speech is not a reason to remove someone from a platform. The people this network was built for — journalists, human rights defenders, labour organisers, climate advocates, people from communities that are over-policed and under-protected — have been de-platformed, deranked, and silenced precisely because their speech was controversial.

We will defend lawful speech that a reasonable person might find uncomfortable or politically contentious. Our line is not "comfortable to everyone" — it is "lawful and not designed to cause real harm". Below that line, content stays. Above it, it does not.

What is not permitted

The following content and conduct are prohibited on Zaytoun Network, across all products:

Illegal content

Content that is illegal under UK law (or the law applicable to you) — including child sexual abuse material (CSAM), content that incites racial or religious hatred, and content that violates applicable sanctions. There is no grey area here: illegal content is removed immediately and, where required by law, reported to authorities.

Harassment and targeted abuse

Content designed to intimidate, harass, or cause sustained distress to a specific person. This includes coordinated pile-ons, repeated unwanted contact directed at an individual, and content whose primary purpose is to make someone fear for their safety.

Doxxing

Publishing private identifying information about a person without their consent — including home addresses, workplace details, phone numbers, or information that could be used to locate or physically find someone. This platform exists in part because many of its users face real physical risk; we take doxxing seriously regardless of who the target is.

Impersonation

Creating a profile or publishing content that falsely represents you as a specific real person (other than yourself), a Zaytoun team member, or an organisation — with the intent to mislead. Satire and parody are permitted where they are clearly labelled as such.

Spam and malware

Unsolicited bulk messaging, artificial amplification (fake engagement, bot networks), phishing attempts, and content that distributes or links to malware, ransomware, or other malicious software.

Abuse of the infrastructure

Automated access, scraping, or actions that overload the platform's systems beyond what normal use entails. Bulk automated access requires our prior written consent.

What we will not remove

To be explicit about our commitments:

  • •Speech that criticises governments, institutions, corporations, or powerful individuals — even sharply
  • •Content that takes a political or social position, including positions that are minority views or commercially inconvenient
  • •Journalism, research, or documentation of human rights abuses — including content that may be disturbing in the service of bearing witness
  • •Content that is the subject of a complaint but is plainly lawful and not designed to harm the reporter personally

We will not remove content simply because someone finds it objectionable. We will not remove content in response to legal threats that lack legal merit. If we receive a lawful removal order from a UK court or competent authority (or another authority with valid jurisdiction), we will comply and notify the affected user where we are permitted to do so.

How to report content

If you believe content on the platform violates this policy, contact us at hello@zaytoun.network with the subject line "Content report". Please include:

  • •A link to the specific content
  • •Which part of this policy you believe it violates, and why
  • •Whether you are the person directly affected or reporting on behalf of someone else

We will acknowledge your report within 5 business days and aim to reach a decision within 15 business days. For urgent reports involving credible personal safety risks, we will act faster. Where we remove content, we will notify the author (unless doing so creates a safety risk or is prohibited by law).

Takedowns and appeals

If your content is removed or your account is suspended, we will tell you why — to the extent we are able — and give you the opportunity to respond. If you believe we made the wrong call, email hello@zaytoun.network with the subject line "Content appeal". We will review your appeal and respond.

We are a small team and our moderation process is human, not automated. We will make mistakes. When we do, we will correct them.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the platform grows. Substantial changes will be communicated to registered users. The "last updated" date at the top always reflects the current version.
